we got a kitten.

We got a kitten. It was spontaneous. I was scrolling through Facebook and a posting shared that 4 kittens were available. I hesitated half a second and then messaged. They were posted by a farm about 10 miles away. I asked a question about their personalities and a quick response came back that there is only 1 left now and they are $20. Wait. What? Ok well I looked at the picture of the one left. She had a concern on her face. I messaged saying she had a concern on her face but would love to come meet her. She responded that she is friendly and sweet. She says I can hold her for you and if you decide you don’t want her it is no problem as she has had 400 people message her already and was in the process of removing the post. In the morning, bright and early I drove the 10 miles to meet this kitten. Nobody was there at the farm. I waited a bit and then called. They told me to go in the barn, 2nd door on the left and that they were in there. I opened the door to a wired dog crate with 5 kittens staring back at me with the widest curious eyes. There was no need to evaluate if she was a fit or not, I knew instantly looking at all 5 kittens that they all were ready for their next adventure. I wanted to make sure I took the right kitten as all the others were spoken for. They told me she was the only one with an all-black tail. Ok! I know which one now. I opened the door, and she was the first one to take a step out. That’s a good sign. It was like she knew this was all about her. I scooped her up, put the $20 on the shelf and headed to the car putting her in a carrier for the ride home. The ride home was filled with tiny meows and my soothing words that we would be home quickly.
After a short introduction to Bob and my oldest son Justin who was over helping with chores, I took her to the house and set her up in our room. Kitty litter…check. Fresh water…check. Food…check. I opened the carrier on the bed and out popped her head. She looked left then right and out she hopped to start exploring. Hetja our Icelandic dog was at my side. Hetja so wanted to give her a big kiss and it was all she could do not to run up to her. Off the bed, under the bed, over to the water dish, quick drink. Over to the food dish and she had a quick bite and then was off again to explore.

We need a name. A kitten this ready for life’s adventures needs a grand name. Something Nordic. Maybe something that means brave as she is so bold. Or maybe the name of a Nordic goddess. That would be perfect. A quick google search identified the name almost immediately. Freyja. That is perfect. Freyja is a Nordic goddess. Freyja it is.

More play time and then as quickly as she was playing, she curled in a little ball, closed her eyes and was a sleep. This sweet little kitten is absolutely perfect. We are so lucky to have found her. Or maybe it wasn’t luck and she found us:)
